Scorpion Lionfish

(Pterois antennata)

Another slow swimming member of the Lionfish family. The Scorpion has a few wide red bands across the body with elongated white rays on the dorsal and pectoral fins. It is possible to determine male and females at breeding time since males become darker and female paler with enlarged abdomens. Like all Lionfish the Scorpion appears to lumber around slowly, but when near a small fish can gulp it down in an instant.
